Peace History Society Edited Book Prize

The inaugural Edited Book Prize presented to Charles F. Howlett, Christian P. Peterson, Deborah D. Buffton, and David L. Hostetter, ed., The Oxford Handbook of Peace History (Oxford University Press, 2023).

We are delighted to award the inaugural prize for an Edited Book in the field of peace history or peace studies to the editors of The Oxford Handbook of Peace History: Charles F. Howlett, Christin P. Peterson, Deborah D. Buffton, & David L. Hostetter. The Handbook is an ambitious and impressive contribution to peace history and peace studies. Ranging from the ancient world to the 21st century, this 900-page anthology encompasses chronological and geographical breath and presents a truly global history of peace history and peacemaking. It features 45 international scholars whose entries are organized into 6 sections and 40 chapters. Three sections are organized chronologically, while three others consider exemplary peace advocates, essential issues, and the future of peace history. A long introduction addresses the definition and historiography of peace history, as well as issues related to the field. Each chapter includes valuable Notes and Further Reading. Both scholars and educators will welcome this edited volume. Congratulations to the editors, contributors, and Oxford University Press for producing this timely and significant work.
