The Inter-personal as Political: Individual Witness for Peace and Justice in a Global Perspective

Barry University, Miami Shores, Florida
October 20-22

Barry University is excited to host the October 2011 Peace History Conference.  Barry University is a private, Catholic institution with a history of academic excellence in the Dominican tradition. Founded in 1940 in Miami, Florida, the Barry University community is comprised of nearly 9,000 students, served by more than 2,100 administrators, faculty members and support staff from a wide range of religious, cultural and ethnic backgrounds. The faculty and administration have worked closely together to serve the student population and the local community surrounding the University, where its expansion and growth have kept pace with excellence in education programs.  The tropical beauty of Barry University includes 54 buildings, with indoor and outdoor athletic facilities, spread over 80 of our 122-acre campus.  Conference participants can fly into Miami International Airport, Fort Lauderdale International Airport, or arrive by car via Interstate 95.  Directions to Barry University can be accessed at: http://www.barry.edu/aboutbarry/Locations/DrivingDirections.htm
A map of the campus can be accessed at: http://www.barry.edu/aboutbarry/Locations/CampusMap.htm

Local transportation: Unfortunately, public transportation in the Miami area is not the best.  Participants can take a taxi to their hotel, rent a car, or in the case of the Best Western (see below), there is a shuttle service available to the hotel.  Plans are being made to use a university van to shuttle people to and from the hotel and the Barry campus.  If necessary, this shuttle could be used for airport transportation as well.  For updated information on transportation contact Tim Smith at esmith@mail.barry.edu.
Conference Housing (please note these room rates are in limited supply and should be reserved as soon as possible, and at least 30 days before the conference):
Best Western on the Bay Inn and Marina:  Guests should call 800-624-3961 to make a reservation and should say they need to reserve a room for “the October 20, 2011 Barry University group.”  The rate is $74 per night plus taxes.  Their website is: http://www.bestwesternonthebay.com/.

The Best Western offers complimentary Miami Airport shuttle service between the hours of 7AM - 10PM for pick ups and from 7AM - 11AM for drop offs.  The guest needs to call the hotel at 305-865-7100 ext 0 and request the shuttle once they have arrived and gathered their baggage.  At that point the front desk clerk will give the guest instructions on where to wait and timeframe for pick up.  There will be rides available to and from Barry University from the hotel.

For those interested in other hotels, here is a list of hotels near Barry, but there will be no transportation available to and from the university:
